New feature, discarded audio??
Hi, I've been using MPC for a week or so, and CONGRATULATIONS! A very nice audio codec indeed, MPC and Ogg Vorbis are definately the only codecs in the world that I need now (^-^)V

I've never been very interested in lossless compression, the files are still too large, and both MPC and Ogg Vorbis are practically indistinguishable from PCM/WAV (especially MPC). However, since lossless compression (or erroneously also called codecs) are so hot these days, I decided to look through the lossless "codecs" once more. I still lacked any interest in lossless "codecs" whatsoever, but one thing did catch my eye! I think it was Wavpack that had this feature, instead of just encoding a audio file, it also stored the audio that was discarded. I definately like this, and since MPC is the main codec I use (and will use for all infinity^^), I started to wonder, wouldn't it be possible to add that feature to MPC, to simply create a separate file of all the discarded audio, which could then be compressed with 7z or mayby a lossless "codec", and whenever you need the audio file for editing, or for converting to Ogg Vorbis, or any other format you could simply decode the file to its original PCM/WAV form by combining the encoded file and the discarded audio.

Perhaps its a bit unnecessary, but I really liked the idea, I'd love to be able to store the audio discarded when I encode MPC files (^.^), it's like saving the original drawing once you've scanned it and coloured it in Photoshop or GIMP, it's just plain nice!!

How about it? is there any chance at all, that such a feature would be implemented in the future?

this feature is called a correction file and is a feature of some lossless/hybrid codecs (i.e. wavpack, optimfrog)

there is virtually 0% chance of this ever being considered for musepack, as it misses the focus of musepack (completely).

current development does not alter the psymodel or quality, it fixes bugs and works on furthering the adoption of the format (think decoding/encoding libraries, player plugins, small utilities, awareness, hardware support, etc.)

It's technically impossible to add this feature to Musepack because Musepack is not a lossless codec and differs massively from any lossless codec. There is no "discarded audio" to complete the lossy file. WavPack and OptimFROG are mainly lossless codecs and their lossy and hybrid modes have absolutely no similarity to Musepack and other lossy codecs such as Vorbis, MP3 and AAC. The lossy/hybrid features of WavPack and OptimFROG are an integral part of a lossless codec whole.

well, we can speculate all day if it is possible or not... :)

a similar thread was talked about on HA and i've dug it up from here:
