About License of Musepack

May I know what is the license that currently Musepack hold?

And, what are the legal issues that hold back the Musepack support in MP3 players?

I really appreciate if someone can help to answer my queries. Thanks in advance.

- Musepack is under LGPL
- Almost all mp3 players support WMA and WMA license is lgpl incompatible
- This thread can be usefull too...

What is LGPL license all about?

This is what the LGPL license is all about, and this is the part that clashes with the Windows Media license, which forbids reverse engineering:
Quote:

6. As an exception to the Sections above, you may also combine or link a "work that uses the Library" with the Library to produce a work containing portions of the Library, and distribute that work under terms of your choice, provided that the terms permit modification of the work for the customer's own use and reverse engineering for debugging such modifications.

If it is the license that hold back the process of support by MP3 player manufacturers, why not we change the license? Who has the authority to change the license?

This has been discussed, the BSD license or similar might be used instead of LGPL. It's Frank Klemm's decision. Hopefully soon this will be resolved.

Thanks for your helpful information. So only Frank can change the license, I believe. Do you have the contact information of him?

And, which version of Musepack is means for portable players? Where can we download the code?

I truly appreciate your reply. ;)

At the bottom you can find what you want.

As for contacting Frank, the team can do it. Right now he's busy and there's no point in annoying him with license issues.
